Save More Money Shopping Online

Do you remember the days that you had to go to brick and mortar buildings to buy everything? Maybe you occasionally placed an order through a catalogue company. Any other J. C. Penney catalogue fans out there? I remember devouring those as a child. They were Christmas list heaven!

Then the mid-to-late-90’s came along and shopping was forever changed. Shopping became something that could be done in the wee hours of the morning or late at night…. in your PJs….. snuggled up on the couch.

Everything is literally at our fingertips, available for online purchase: clothing, housewares, personal care items, home supplies, food, and so much more.

One of my favorite benefits of online shopping is the ability to “shop around” for the best price (without visiting half a dozen stores). Here are some of my favorite tools for making online savings even greater:

  1. Online coupons. Always, always check to see if there are coupons for your online shop. There are several resources for finding discount codes, but my personal favorite is RetailMeNot. It’s simple to search for your store of choice and peruse current codes.
  2. Honey for Chrome. This makes saving so easy. It’s ridiculous (in a really great way)! You can find more details here, but to briefly summarize, simply install this plugin for your browser and click the “Find Savings” button that Honey generates before placing your online orders. It automatically scours the internet for deals for your order with that shop and applies the coupon.
  3. Amazon Prime. A few years ago, we lived in a tiny town that boasted little more than a grocery store. The nearest “real” stores were a two hour drive away. It was SO handy to place an online order and have it appear at the door within 48 hours (free two day shipping is included in your membership fee).
  4. Daily Discount Emails. There are a lot of daily deal sites for a variety of interests that you can follow.  Some of my favorites are Zulily (women’s and children’s clothing), Pick Your Plum (DIY supplies), and Joss & Main (home goods). Make sure that the purchases you make are within your budget- it’s easy to get carried away! Snagging a good deal with money that is spoken for in other areas of your budget is not a bargain at all!
